Description
Queen Mary's Steps and a fragment of Whitehall Palace are located on Horse Guards Avenue in the City of Westminster. This Grade I listed structure is part of the former riverside terrace and steps, along with remains of the palace wall. The site features reconstructed remains of a Tudor palace wall and the north end of the terrace and river steps, which were built between 1691 and 1693 by Sir Christopher Wren. The construction is made of Portland stone. The reconstructed Tudor work represents part of the base of the corner of the river wall of Henry VIII's Whitehall Palace. In front of this wall is the surviving north end of Queen Mary's Terrace, which includes a curved flight of steps flanked by ashlar retaining walls. At the top of the steps, there are the bases of four columns and the doorway sill of the river gate.
