Description

Nos 1 to 26 Sussex Place, also known as the London Graduate School of Business Studies, is a Grade I listed unified terrace block built between 1822 and 1823 by John Nash, with construction by William Smith. This building is part of Nash's Regent's Park Crown Estate development. It features a stucco exterior, slate roofs, and pointed metal domes.

The design is notable for its palatial quadrant-ended composition, which includes a private garden at the front and entrances that were originally located at the rear. It is considered the most eccentric of Nash's terraces, showcasing painted dome-capped canted bay-turrets on the wings, as well as a junction with quadrants and a flanking centrepiece that includes a uniform giant colonnade separating the remaining floors. Many features were adapted from a Nash scheme for the rebuilding of Carlton House.

The building consists of three main storeys and an attic storey. The six-bay centrepiece is flanked by nine-bay ranges and seven-bay quadrants, with two canted bay-turrets on the east fronts of the wings. The recessed glazing bar sashes have segmental arches at the ground floor of the canted bay-turrets. The ground floor also features a segmental arcaded loggia-podium with a balustraded parapet, above which rises a giant Corinthian colonnade supporting a continuous entablature with a balustraded parapet in front of the attic, which is set back on the main ranges. The crowning cornice and pediment over the centrepiece are advanced as the top floor of the canted bay-turrets, which are surmounted by spike finialed pointed domes.
