Description
The Citadel is a bunker-fortress and air raid shelter built in 1939, designed by the Ministry of Works with consultant W.A. Forsyth. It is constructed from reinforced concrete and features a facing of concrete with pebble and flint aggregate. The building has a flat roof and presents a massive Cubist fortress appearance. It stands three stories high with slightly battered walls and includes a watch tower above the parapet at the corner with the Mall. There is a terrace at the second floor level, which is flanked by machine gun turrets. The Citadel is also associated with the New Government Offices and the Second World War Cabinet Rooms in Whitehall.
