Description
The Institution of Civil Engineers is the headquarters of the organization, built in 1912 by James Miller. It features a stone exterior and a slate roof, designed in a grand Beaux Arts Dixhuitieme style. The building is a monumental corner block with two main storeys and a half basement, measuring nine windows wide in a symmetrical layout. The central entrance is flanked by slightly advanced end bays, which are connected by a giant colonnade to the first floor. The ground floor has a channelled finish with a central portal supported by Ionic columns, topped with an elaborately carved crest. Most windows are square-headed, except for the semicircular arched windows in the central bays of the ground floor. The first-floor windows are located in channelled terminal pavilions, featuring elaborate surrounds and framed as aedicules. A deep drowning entablature with a balustraded parapet crowns the building, along with a tall attic on the corner pavilion. There is a similar return to Storey's Gate, and a stone area balustrade adds to the exterior. The interiors boast rich neo-Palladian and Baroque detailing, including a domed assembly hall.
