Description
This is a grand, symmetrical terrace of houses located on Exhibition Road in Westminster. Built in the mid-19th century, the terrace comprises numbers 49 to 58, known as Princes Gate, with the central and end houses set forward slightly. The buildings are constructed of stucco, with visible rusticated quoins on the central and end houses and channelling to the ground floor. Each house has three windows wide across four storeys, plus an attic and basement. The entrance porches are of a Doric style. The first-floor windows are flanked by Ionic half columns and pilasters, with balustraded balconies. Corinthian half columns and pilasters frame the second-floor windows, with a pediment above the centre of each house. The third-floor windows have segmental heads, while the attic features similarly shaped windows. A very detailed modillion cornice runs along the top of the main building line, with a subsidiary cornice below. The terrace is fronted by cast iron area railings.
