Description
A row of terraced houses with shops, dating from around 1815 as part of the Portman Estate development. The buildings are constructed of stock brick, with the ground floors stuccoed, and have concealed slate roofs. They rise to four storeys and have a two-window frontage. The doorways to the left-hand side, at numbers 231 and 233, feature semi-circular arches with panelled doors and radial fanlights; the remaining doorways are square headed with fanlights. The shop fronts were added in the mid to later 19th century, though they have been altered in the 20th century. The upper floors have sash windows with glazing bars, set within flat, gauged red brick arches, with the exception of number 241, which has stucco architraves. A stucco frieze runs along the top, surmounted by a crowning cornice and a blocking course. Some original cast iron window guards remain, and numbers 237 and 239 also retain bracketed original cast iron balconies.
