Description
A group of terraced town houses located on Devonshire Street in the City of Westminster, built around 1780 to 1790 as part of the Portland Estate development. The houses are constructed of stock brick with channelled stucco to the ground floors, and have concealed slate roofs. They stand four storeys high with basements. Each house is three windows wide, except for number 45, which has five windows, two of which are above a mews entrance. Semicircular arched doorways are present in numbers 45 to 47, with reverse entrances to numbers 43 and 44. The doorways feature panelled doors and fanlights; numbers 43, 46, and 47 have Doric pilastered jambs, while number 44 has a wider opening with side lights and a leaded fanlight framed with Coade stone vermiculated blocks, voussoirs, and a mask keystone. The upper floors feature recessed sash windows with intact glazing bars, each set within a flat, gauged arch. Stuccowork finishes with a plat band at the first floor level. A parapet with coping runs along the roofline. Continuous cast iron balconies, featuring Gothic and palmette patterns, are present on the first floors of numbers 43, 44, and 46. Numbers 45 and 47 have simpler balconettes. Cast iron area railings with tasselled spike finials are found at numbers 43, 44, 46, and 47.
