Description
The Church of St Philip, located in Park Town Estate, was built in 1869 by J T Knowles, who later became Sir James Knowles. This church is constructed of Kentish ragstone and features an early and later Middle-Pointed architectural style. It includes a nave, aisles, transepts, an apsidal chancel, and a low tower situated at the liturgical south-west. Originally, a tall spire was planned but not built.
The tower is designed with angle buttresses and turrets, and at the upper bell stage, it has tall traceried openings. The north aisle consists of six bays and has stepped buttresses between the windows, topped with a parapet that displays blind arcading. The south aisle, which has four bays, is similar and features a gabled south porch with clasping buttresses. The south transept includes angle buttresses, a two-lancet window, and a rose window above, while the north transept also has a two-light window.
The seven-bay apsidal chancel is supported by stepped buttresses and continues the line of the blind arcading parapet. Inside, the church reflects the style of Gilbert Scott, showcasing lavishly carved foliage and an apse adorned with geometrical tracery. The east windows were replaced in 1954 and are the work of T D Randall of Faithcraft.
