Description
This is a terrace of 11 houses, numbered 81 to 95 Nightingale Lane, built in the third quarter of the 19th century. The houses have shops on the ground floor and two storeys above. Each house is one window wide, with coupled sash windows, while the end houses have angled returns with three single windows. The terrace is constructed of pale pink terracotta brick with terracotta dressings.
The ground floor shopfronts are framed by piers with decorative corbel blocks above. These piers function as high plinths supporting Corinthian columns with a helical twist to the dado. Each end shop has its entrance within a canted angle, where piers frame the door and support the fascia. The lines of the piers continue upwards through the upper storeys to the modillions of the eaves cornice, which are in the form of vermiculated quoin blocks. On the first floor, the piers flank round-headed sash windows within arches springing from a central pier and side piers. The keystones rise to a continuous cornice and blocking course. The second floor features sashes in architraves with cambered heads, also framed by a central pier and side piers. The return walls have single windows mirroring the design of the front elevations. The stacks, some of which have been altered, have terracotta cornices.
Number 81, a former chemist’s shop, retains original features including panelled stallrisers, glass fascias with gilt lettering to the front, splay, and return. Inside, the shop features a glass display counter, a mirror-backed display cabinet, a gilt and painted glass panel inscribed "Prescriptions Prepared," and three chemist’s display flagons.
