Description
Number 74 on Nightingale Lane is a later 19th-century Italian Gothic house, built around 1874. It features a symmetrical design with three bays, a basement, two storeys, and half-dormers that have been altered to create a full second floor. A striking tower rises at the left corner of the building.
The house is constructed from pale gault bricks and stone, showcasing elaborate detailing on the arches and string courses. On the ground floor, granite columns with stiffleaf capitals support a deep round-arched porch topped with a gabled roof. The canted bow windows on either side have granite piers supporting round-arched sashes and bold cogged parapets. On the first floor, the central sash and the twin sashes of the side bay are connected by impost bands beneath round-arched heads. The three sashes of the former half-dormers are framed by gauged cambered arches.
The tower features twin sashes with gauged cambered arches beneath a Gothic arch at ground level. Above, there is a twin lancet window with a colonnette under a Gothic arch, followed by twin shouldered arch sashes set in the spandrel of a Gothic arch. Higher up, a decorative band and gauged round arch frame a single sash. Close-set brackets support a balcony with an intricate iron balustrade at the top stage, which has triplet round-arched lights. The eaves of the hipped roof are also supported by closely spaced brackets and topped with a delicate iron finial.
To the right of the house, there is a three-bay extension. A stock brick screen wall runs along the west boundary, and the boundary walls are made of brick with stone-capped piers and iron railings. The property is included in the listing despite the recent addition of a storey.
