Description
Church Row is a significant terrace of houses located on Wandsworth Plain, dating from around 1723. The building consists of a balanced block of three storeys and a basement, with each house featuring three windows across its facade. Constructed from brown brick, the design includes brick pier projections between pairs of windows and at the corners, with blank panel windows in the centre of each pair.
Each house has stone steps leading to the entrance doors, which are framed by wooden doorcases that include plinth blocks, fluted Corinthian pilasters, and an entablature with a dentil cornice. There is an arched footway at the ground floor between Nos 3 and 4, as well as carriageways between Nos 1 and 2 and Nos 5 and 6. The windows are fitted with gauged red brick arches and dressings; the arches on the ground and first floors are segmental, with the first floor also featuring brick keyblocks.
Notably, the centre blank window on the first floor displays a sundial inscribed with "AD1723 Vigilate et Orate." Above the first floor, there is a moulded, gauged red brick band. The eaves cornice is wooden and blocked, with a pediment over the central five windows. The roof is hipped, combining slate and tile, and features stacks with oversailing courses at the hips and flanking the centre pair of houses. Some wrought iron railings are present in the forecourts and entrances, while No 1 has a later ground floor shop on its forecourt.
