Description
'Single Form (Memorial)' is a sculpture created by Barbara Hepworth between October 1961 and February 1962, with this edition cast from October 1963 to June 1964 for installation at Battersea Park in London. The sculpture is made of bronze and stands on a bronze self-base. In front of it, there is a sandstone raked block that has an inscribed bronze plaque.
The sculpture itself is a freestanding, smooth-edged, flattened ovoid shape with a rippled surface and a circular opening located off-centre near the top. It is positioned on grass by the southern edge of the boating lake in Battersea Park. The sculpture measures 3.12 meters in height, 2 meters in width, and 25.4 centimeters in depth. The self-base, which is part of the sculpture, is a shallow rectangular shape measuring 8 centimeters in height, 1.22 meters in width, and 91 centimeters in depth.
The self-base features a handwritten signature and date by Hepworth on its upper surface, located on the rear north-western face of the sculpture, reading: Barbara Hepworth/Oct 1961-Feb 1962. Additionally, there is a founder's mark incised on the same rear face of the self-base, stating: Morris/Singer.
In front of the southern face of the sculpture, the rectangular raked block holds a fixed plaque inscribed in white capital letters with the following text:
SINGLE FORM/1961-62/DEDICATED TO/DAG HAMMARSKJÖLD/BY/BARBARA HEPWORTH.
