Description
The Archway to Rotherhithe Tunnel Approach, built in 1908, is a notable structure located on Branch Road in Shadwell. This archway mirrors the design found on the Surrey side and features two large banded granite piers with plinths and cornice caps. These piers support a flanged and bolted semi-circular steel arch, which showcases the arched bracing of the tunnel itself. The chief engineer for this project was Sir Maurice Fitzmaurice, and the architect was Thomas Blashill. The tunnel was officially opened by the Prince of Wales, who later became King George V, in the same year.
