Description
The wine cellars at the premises of Messrs Asher Storey, located at Nos 8 to 10 Tower Hill, date from the mid-19th century and are partially situated in the City of London, below a raised public terrace. The outer doorway features rusticated stone quoins and is set in a partly rebuilt wall. There is a 19th-century crane alongside the entrance. The cellars span three levels with walls that are 20 inches thick. Earlier cellars on this site are believed to have connections with All Hallows Church, the Tiger Tavern, and the Tower of London. Inside, an iron spiral staircase and a plain stone stair provide access. The brick vaulted roof is supported by cylindrical iron pillars set on closely spaced beams. There are vats from 1910-1912 of an unusual Swiss design, lined with glass tiles and set in concrete. These cellars are the last remaining evidence of the once extensive wine trade in this area.
