Description
The Royal Oak Public House is a Victorian building from the second half of the 19th century, located on Whitechapel Road in London. It is constructed of red brick with white stone dressings and features a slate roof. The building stands three storeys tall, with a central portion rising to four storeys, characterized by vertical rusticated stone bands.
Each wing of the building has a window with three lights, each featuring a semi-circular head. The central section has three round-headed windows, and all first-floor windows are topped with shallow arches. The windows are all sash style, framed with stone architraves that include some mouldings. The second-floor windows are adorned with elaborate cast iron balconies supported by decorated corbels. A decorative band runs between the first and second floors.
At the top of the central storey, there is a window with five lights set within a semi-circular head, featuring decorated spandrel motifs above. Figures are used as pilasters on either side of this window, beneath a cornice and pediment. The side wings are capped with a blocking course above the cornice, which is complemented by a cast iron balustrade. The ground floor has a corbelled fascia board and includes a carriage entrance to Vine Court at the eastern end of the building.
