Description

The Old Hospital Block and Raised Terrace and Railings are two houses, now converted into flats, built in 1718 for Ordnance clerks. The buildings are constructed of Flemish bond brick and feature a gabled plain roof with brick ridge and end stacks.

The design includes a double-depth plan with three storeys, a basement, and an attic, each house having a symmetrical six-window range. Carved brackets support flat hoods above segmental-arched six-panel doors, two of which are glazed. The ground and second floors have gauged red brick segmental arches over mid to late 19th-century twelve-pane sash windows, while the first-floor windows feature similar semi-circular arches with radiating glazing bars. There are raised string courses beneath the second-floor windows and a stone-coped parapet at the top. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is likely to be of interest.

Notable additional features include a raised stone-coped brick terrace at the front, which is complemented by wrought-iron railings topped with urn finials.
