Description

The Southwark Military Hospital War Memorial Cross is a marble monument erected within the grounds of the former Dulwich Hospital. Constructed from Carrara marble, it dates from the period following the Great War. The memorial consists of a Latin cross with a crosslet head, rising from a collar featuring a blind arcade, all set upon a tall, octagonal shaft. The shaft itself originates from a square plinth with recessed panels on each face, and stands upon a two-stepped, octagonal base. Inscribed within these recessed panels on the plinth is a dedicatory inscription to the front face, reading β€œTO THE MEMORY OF/ THE NON-COMMISSIONED/ OFFICERS AND MEN/ OF THE ARMIES OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE/ WHO DIED FOR FREEDOM AND HONOUR/ IN THIS HOSPITAL/ DURING THE GREAT WAR/ 1915 – 1919.” The remaining faces of the plinth list the names of those commemorated.
