Description
Nos. 6, 8, and 10 Borough High Street are commercial premises, now functioning as a bank, built in the early to mid-19th century. The building is constructed of stucco and features a roof that is obscured by a blocking course. It is designed in the Italianate palazzo style, with a rounded angle on the left return. The main elevation consists of four storeys and a basement, with a total of nine bays, while the return has four storeys and two basement levels, the upper one being rusticated and comprising three bays.
The main elevation includes a plinth at street level with semi-sunk basement windows. The ground floor features a frieze and cornice supported by pilasters, with decorative paterae in the necking and panelled bases at the basement level. The ground floor has 20th-century windows, with the end window now serving as a door. There is a doorway with a break-front cornice on heavy, scrolled brackets, topped by a segmental pediment.
The first-floor sash windows are adorned with architraves, a pulvinated frieze, and a vermiculated keystone, along with a cornice and pediment. Balustrades are present at the bases of these windows, with the rails extending continuously along a string. The second-floor sash windows also feature architraves, a frieze, and a cornice with bracketed sills and a sill string. The third-floor segment-headed sash windows have architraves with keystones linked by a stringcourse, along with bracketed sills and a sill string. Above, there is a frieze and cornice embellished with dentils and modillions. The fenestration on the rounded corner and return is treated in a similar manner. The interior has not been inspected.
