Description
The Oratory House, which is the London headquarters, private chapel, and library of the Oratorian fathers, consists of a main house and the northern part of the west wing designed by JJ Scoles in 1853. The southern part of the west wing was built between 1872 and 1873 and was partially refaced in stone by Leonard Stokes in 1911. The building features gault brick and stucco with slate roofs and is designed in the Italianate style.
The north block is four storeys high and five windows wide, with sash windows that have margin lights, rustications on the ground floor, and a central entrance. The west wing is three storeys tall and includes balustraded parapets. Inside the west wing, the ground floor contains the Little Oratory, which was refitted with stalls, an apsidal sanctuary, an altar, and ceiling decoration by J Hungerford Pollen between 1871 and 1872. The walls feature grisaille paintings by Edgar Ritchard and Adrian Brookholding-Jones from 1954. On the first floor, the galleried library is primarily the work of Scoles. At the south end of the west wing, St Wilfred's Hall on the first floor has Italianate painted decoration. The Oratory House is connected at the east end to the Brompton Oratory Church.
