Description

This mid-16th century garden wall, partly rebuilt in the mid-18th century, runs approximately 20 metres east-west. The wall is constructed of red brick, with an average brick size of approximately 232mm x 111mm x 56mm, laid in English bond. The lower eleven courses on the south side retain original Tudor brickwork. The upper 23 courses were rebuilt in the mid-18th century, largely reusing original bricks but incorporating harder, darker red brick. The wall now forms a boundary between numbers 17-21 Oakley Gardens and the garden of number 21 Cheyne Walk. Originally built as a garden wall north of Henry VIII's Manor House at Chelsea in the late 1530s, it is one of the few remaining visible fragments of that estate.
