Description

Numbers 11-18 Ashby Street are a row of terraced houses and shops built between 1815 and 1818. They are constructed of yellow brick laid in a Flemish bond, with stucco detailing, and have roofs hidden behind a parapet. The houses generally have two windows each, although number 12 lacks a basement.

Number 12 features a shop front with a panelled dado, reeded pilasters, fascia, cornice, and panelled doors of original design. Number 18 has a later shop front, seemingly added to the earlier 19th-century structure, also with reeded pilasters. The basement and ground floors of numbers 13-15 have a stucco finish scored to resemble ashlar. All visible window and door openings have gauged brick heads.

Number 11 has a round-arched entrance with reeded pilasters, a modillion cornice, a fanlight with decorative glazing, and a panelled door of original design. Numbers 13-14 have simpler replacement doorcases but retain fanlights and panelled doors of the original design. Numbers 15-17 have reeded doorcases; the fanlight is blocked at number 15, but number 16 retains its decorative glazing and a panelled door of original design. Number 18 has reeded quarter-columns framing a reeded doorcase, a blocked fanlight, and a panelled door of original design. Ground-floor windows are flat-arched, except for number 16, which has a cambered arch. A stucco sill band runs along the first floor, and the upper windows are flat-arched. Cast-iron balconies are present on the first floor of number 11. Original 6/6 sash windows are found at numbers 11 (first and second floors), 12 (first and second floors), and 16 (ground and first floors). A parapet tops the building, and stacks are present within the party walls. Area railings with urn and spearhead finials are found at numbers 11 and 17, while numbers 13-16 have spike finials.
