Description
31-33 Cloudesley Street are terraced houses built around 1836. They are constructed of yellow brick in Flemish bond with stucco, and the roof is obscured by a parapet. The buildings rise three storeys above a basement, with two windows on each level. The basement and ground floor are stuccoed, featuring chamfered rustication on the ground floor. There are steps leading up to a round-arched entrance flanked by panelled pilasters, with a fanlight that has decorative glazing. The ground-floor window is also round-arched, and the stucco work terminates at a storey band. The upper windows are flat-arched, with those on the first floor designed in piano nobile proportions, complete with architraves, cornices, and individual cast-iron balconies. The second-floor windows have moulded architraves. The original design sashes are preserved in nos 21 (ground and first floors) and 32 (ground and first floors). The buildings feature a stuccoed parapet and chimney stacks on the party walls. There are cast-iron railings with spear-and-tassel finials surrounding the steps and area.
