Description
The Postal Workers' War Memorial, built in 1920, is a war memorial dedicated to postal workers. It is made of Portland stone and designed as an aedicule featuring Ionic columns and a broken semi-circular pediment. The memorial frames a stone tablet that lists the names of 130 men. Inside the tympanum, there is a gilt wreath and sword, along with the inscription: ‘PRO PATRIA / ET LIBERTATE’. A plaque below honors the memory of those who fell in the Great War from 1914 to 1919, stating: "TO THE HONOURED MEMORY OF / OUR HEROIC COMRADES WHO FELL / IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919." The base is inscribed: ‘SUBSCRIBED FOR AND ERECTED BY THEIR COLLEAGUES / OF THE WESTERN POSTAL DISTRICT / AS A LASTING TRIBUTE TO THEIR SELF-SACRIFICE’. Additionally, the plinth features a metal plaque that commemorates those lost in the Second World War, inscribed ‘1939-1945’ along with the names of 56 men.
