Description
This is a row of twenty-one terraced houses, originally called Elizabeth Terrace, built in 1821 and completed by 1824. They are located on the south side of Cloudesley Place, Islington. The houses are built of yellow brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with stucco dressings. The roof is hidden behind a parapet. Each house has three storeys over a basement, with two windows per front. Nos. 4-7 and 14-17 are set back slightly from the main terrace line.
The doorways have round arches supported by fluted quarter-columns, a plain cornice, a fanlight with decorative glass, and an original panelled door. All the windows are flat-arched sashes, largely original to the design. A plain stucco sill band runs along the first-floor windows, each set back under a round arch of gauged brick, linked by a moulded springing band. Individual cast-iron balconies are present on the first-floor windows. The parapet has been largely rebuilt.
Alterations to individual houses include the replacement of pilasters at No. 2, and replacement sashes at Nos. 5, 6-7, 8-9, 10-11, 14, 17, 19, and 20. The ground floor sashes of Nos. 20 and 21 retain their original design, with margin lights. Overall, the facade details of the terrace are remarkably well preserved.
