Description

Nos. 67-77 on Charterhouse Street is a market building constructed in 1872, originally serving as a meat market with six shops at ground level until the meat traders relocated to the nearby Smithfield Market in 1877. The building is designed in the Ruskinian Venetian Gothic style, although the architect is not known. It is built from red brick, featuring some polychrome brick and Portland stone dressings. At the time of the survey, the hipped slate roof was missing.

The structure consists of three storeys and a basement, with six windows. While the cornice was missing during the survey, a dogtooth band with lion's head masks was still visible. Above the central second-floor windows, there are three high relief masks in roundels. The upper two storeys are defined by their windows, which are connected architecturally across both floors by arcading with round-headed arches, polychrome decoration, and two-storey brick pilasters that include stone-carved iron post blocks and bases. The outer windows feature central half-columns and floral roundels, while the four central windows are tripartite with identical half-columns. The upper windows have Venetian heads with four glazed roundels and a central floral roundel. The first-floor windows have flat arches and are sash windows with horns.

The ground floor retains its original fascia with a cornice and roundels, along with chamfered pilasters that discreetly reference the meat trade for which the building was designed. The shopfronts are from the early 20th century. The rear elevation is simpler, featuring paired sashes on the ground and first floors and metal casements on the second floor. Inside, the building retains original metal columns and wooden floor joists.
