Description
The office building to the south of the grandstand at Fulham Football Club is a pavilion constructed in 1905, designed by Archibald Leitch. It features an eclectic style with elements of Queen Anne Revival. The building is made of red brick with stone dressings and has a slate roof.
It is two storeys high and consists of four bays. The front elevation includes full-height bay windows on the left side, while the third bay is flanked by chimney stacks and topped with a small scrolled pediment. The ground floor windows have scrolled gables, and the upper floor bay window features carved capitals. The upper lights of the timber sash windows have small panes.
On the side facing the pitch, there is a first-floor balcony that was originally for Directors and club officials. This balcony is supported by cast-iron columns with decorative spandrels and has ornate cast-iron balustrading with roundels. The roof has a central gable with bargeboarding and mock timber framing. There are entrances on the side elevations with steps leading to the upper floor. The interior has been significantly altered and retains few original fittings.
Fulham Football Club was founded in 1879 and moved to its current location in 1896. The club is popularly known as 'Craven Cottage,' a name that refers to an 18th-century cottage orné that once stood on the site. This pavilion is of particular importance as it is an integral part of the early football ground and is the only surviving pavilion at a senior British football club.
