Description
Snow Hill Police Station is a police station built in 1926 by Sydney Perks. It is constructed of stone with lead to the bay and has a slate roof. The building stands five storeys tall over a basement and features a three-window range, with all openings being flat arched. It showcases a noteworthy and unusual blend of Moderne and Arts and Crafts styles. The ground floor has banded rustication and includes three doors; the side doors have one sidelight each, while the central door is set in a rectangular recess beneath a full-height polygonal bay with five windows. This bay is flanked by Tuscan pilaster responds and topped with a cornice that has a Meander pattern and long acanthus brackets. The ground floor also features a running guilloche design. The building has a plain parapet with coping, and ornaments are carefully placed to highlight the simple masonry and the elegant metal-faced bay. Police lanterns are positioned in the parapets over the side elevations. There is also a City of London plaque commemorating the Saracen's Head, which was demolished in 1868.
