Description
Watermen's Hall, located at Nos 17 and 18 St Mary at Hill, was built between 1778 and 1780, possibly by William Blackburn, with an extension added to the north in 1786. This small building features a distinguished front made of Portland stone and consists of two main storeys. The ground floor is rusticated and includes a round-arched window, flanked by square-headed doorways and carved panels above. The upper part is adorned with pairs of Ionic pilasters that support an entablature with an enriched frieze and a pediment that rises through the parapet.
A large Venetian window with a fanlight in the lunette and carved arms on the apron enhances the façade. The building has a modern mansard roof covered in copper. Inside, there is a vaulted entrance passage and a simple curved stone stair with an enriched upper section and a lantern. The first-floor courtroom is notable for its pilasters and pendentives supporting an enriched circular ceiling. A carved marble chimney-piece with arms above is made of wood or plaster. The north extension is constructed of yellow brick with painted dressings. The ground floor includes a shop, while the first floor features a three-light window with a semi-elliptical arch, decorated mullions, and a fanlight, topped by a lunette. A small cornice and rendered parapet complete the building's design.
