Description
Billingsgate Market is a large building constructed between 1872 and 1873, designed by the architect Sir Horace Jones. The market features a huge brick structure with Portland stone dressings, showcasing a classical style influenced by 17th century French architecture. The road front has raised ends and a central section, which is pedimented and consists of three bays with a round-headed arcade. This arcade is extended to the right and left for an additional five bays. Above the cill bands and cornice, there are sash windows. The end blocks have cornices between the storeys and are decorated with pilasters, stone ornaments, and ornamental dormers.
The river elevation is somewhat similar, featuring four and a half storey end blocks with balustraded tops. The curved mansard lead roof along the frontage includes decorative stone dormers, with a larger dormer in the center that resembles the others.
Inside, the market has a cast-iron roofed structure, with extensive storage accommodation located below. The site has been used for market purposes since the 13th century.
