Description
A pair of semi-detached houses dating from the late 19th century, located on the south west side of East Heath Road in Camden. The houses are constructed of painted brick, with two plain bands on the first floor, and have slate roofs with tall brick chimney stacks. They are three storeys high, each with two windows. The front elevations feature double gables, with the outer, slightly projecting bays having projecting eaves supported by brackets. Each house has an entrance within the outer bay, featuring a wide, architraved, segmental-arched doorway with a keystone, fanlight, and panelled door with sidelights. The window architraves are lugged. The ground floor windows are tripartite. The first floor windows in the outer bays are round-arched, while the inner bays have square-headed, two-light casements. The third floor windows are sash windows with pointed heads. The interiors were not inspected. Attached to the houses is a brick wall with panels and stuccoed coping. Number 17 was the home of Katherine Mansfield, writer, and her husband John Middleton Murray, critic, from 1918 to 1920, as recognised by a plaque.
