Description

Numbers 12 and 13 New Square are two terraced chambers built in 1534, with later alterations. They are constructed of brown brick and rise four storeys high, featuring four irregularly spaced windows on each building. The wide, projecting chimney-stacks extend from the ground to the full height of the buildings, with one separating the two chambers and another located to the right of No. 13, indicating that they were part of the rear of the Tudor range. The buildings have gauged red brick flat and segmental arches, along with dressings to flush framed windows that have exposed boxing and 18th-century glazing bars. The parapets are adorned with small pointed gables, with three on No. 12 and two on No. 13.

No. 12, which dates from the late 18th century, features a wooden doorcase with fluted half pilasters, an architrave, paterae on the frieze, and a dentil cornice. The interior has not been inspected but is noted to be greatly altered. No. 13, dating from the late 17th century, has a wooden doorcase with carved consoles, a pulvinated frieze, and a broken segmental pediment. Its interior has also not been inspected but is noted to be altered, with late 16th or early 17th-century overmantels present in some rooms. The buildings are complemented by attached cast-iron railings. Numbers 12 and 13 New Square were formed from the rear of No. 16 Old Buildings.
