Description
The Old Bull and Bush Public House is a public house that is reputedly built as a farm around 1645 and was licensed in 1721. It was rebuilt with modern extensions between 1923 and 1924 in a style similar to the original structure, which included the rebuilding of the ground-floor bay windows and a Venetian window that was originally on the ground floor. Additional alterations were made in the 1970s by Roderick Gradidge. The building is constructed of brown brick and features a hipped slated roof with a brick modillion eaves cornice and tall slab stacks with blind arches.
The pub has two storeys and cellars, with a slightly projecting center that has three windows, flanked by two windows on each side. There are round-arched entrances in the outer bays with wooden doorframes, shaped brackets supporting hoods, fanlights, and part-glazed doors; each penultimate bay has a keyed oculus. The ground floor features two canted bay windows, while the upper floor has gauged red brick flat arches above slightly recessed sashes with exposed boxing. The center window on the upper floor is round-arched with a radial pattern at the head. The facade's center has a parapet that rises above the eaves, with a segmental arch in the middle and statues of sphinxes at either end.
Inside, the pub retains old features along with good inter-war fittings. It has been frequented by notable figures such as the painters Hogarth, Gainsborough, Reynolds, and the playwright Garrick.
