Description

New Court Numbers 1-30 is a block of 30 artisans' flats built in 1854 for the philanthropic solicitor Hugh Jackson, with the architect unknown. The building is constructed of yellow stock brick with red brick dressings, featuring continuous plain brick sill bands on the upper floors and rusticated brick quoins at the corners, which articulate the central bays. It has a slate pitched roof with projecting bracketed eaves and tall slab chimney-stacks. The structure is five storeys high and has twelve windows. Recessed open stone staircases are located between the windows, with landing balconies between the second and third, sixth and seventh, and tenth and eleventh windows. The windows have cambered arches, with transom and mullion casements flanking the staircases and sash windows in between. The interiors have not been inspected. This building is historically significant as the second earliest surviving example of artisans' flats for the "deserving poor" in regular employment, predating the foundation of the Peabody Trust and the Improved Industrial Dwellings Company. The earliest surviving block of this type is the Streatham Street Buildings, now known as Parnell House. Hugh Jackson was the father of architect T.G. Jackson.
