Description

Numbers 36-48 Albany Street comprises six terraced houses dating from the early 19th century and subject to later alterations. The houses are constructed of brick and stucco, with the ground floors of numbers 36-42 rusticated. The stucco on numbers 44-48 has largely been removed, exposing the brickwork. The houses are four storeys high with basements. Each has two windows. The doorways of numbers 44-48 have round arches with cornices above, and include fanlights to numbers 44 and 46, with patterned glazing. Panelled doors are present at each entrance. The recessed sash windows retain some original glazing bars. Numbers 36-42 have plain brick bands at the first-floor level and the third-floor sill level. Cast-iron balconies are attached to the first-floor windows, except at numbers 40 and 46, which have plain 20th-century bar guards. Parapets run along the roofline; numbers 36 and 38 have a cornice and blocking course. The interiors have not been inspected. Attached cast-iron railings are present, with tasselled spearhead finials to numbers 36-42 and urn finials to numbers 44-48. The group has group value, contributing to the architectural character of the street.
