Description
The Church of St Peter is an early 14th century church featuring a 15th century square tower constructed of random stone and flint. The tower has angle buttresses and a castellated parapet adorned with knapped flint and stone chequer work.
On the south side, the clerestory windows are circular and date from the 17th century. The nave is made of flint and has a stucco finish, topped with a slate roof. Inside, there is a 12th century square font with angle-shafts and panels decorated with floral motifs. The altar rail, which has three sides, dates from the mid to late 17th century. A remaining section of a 15th century screen features traceried dado with some original coloring. A Jacobean family pew is notable for its fret cut upper panels.
To the north of the chancel is Soame's Chapel, built in the Jacobean style, which features semi-circular arches with arabesque carvings on the tile soffits and roof pendants. This chapel houses the impressive marble and alabaster tomb of Sir Stephen Soame, who died in 1619 and was Lord Mayor of London in 1593. The tomb displays recumbent figures of Sir Stephen and his wife, along with kneeling figures of their sons and daughters. Additionally, there is early 17th century stained glass in the oval window of the chapel, and a brass of a Knight and Lady from around 1520.
