Description
Denham Hall is a house with an early 16th century core that was extended in the late 16th century, late 17th century, and early 19th century. It has two storeys and features nine windows. The building is timber-framed and was encased in red brick in the 19th century at the front, which has a central five-window set-back. The rear is rendered and includes some 18th century pargetting in panels. The front roof is slated, while the rear is partially tiled. A late 16th century chimney at the back of the front range has elongated hexagonal flues. The sash windows have flat arches and hood-moulds made of red brick above, with small panes and arched glazing bars at the top. The entrance door is off-centre and consists of six fielded panels, flanked by Roman Doric columns, and topped with an entablature featuring a triangular pediment.
The central early 16th century core includes a fragment of a jettied cross-wing supported by knee-braces, an unglazed mullioned window, and a fragment of a coupled-rafter roof. The late 16th century extension at the north end has a clasped purlin roof with wind-bracing, and its walls are close studded and tension-braced. There is also a late 17th century triple-gabled rear timber-framed extension and significant internal alterations. Some fragmentary 18th century panelling and other internal features remain. The front elevation was remodelled in the early 19th century, and a rear wing was added at the south end. Internal alterations in the mid-20th century converted the house into flats. The property is set on a moated site, featuring a late 16th or early 17th century red brick wall to the north and a now-ruinous gazebo at the north corner, which includes a stone mullioned window.
