Description
12 The Sounds is a house dating from the 15th century, with alterations made in the 18th century and around 1970. It is a small open-hall house featuring a cross-wing. The hall has one-and-a-half storeys with an attic, while the wing has two storeys. The structure is timber-framed and rendered, topped with a thatched roof that is hipped to the left and at the rear. It includes an eyebrow casement dormer and an axial chimney made of red brick. The house has 20th-century casements and a one-storey entrance porch with a pantiled roof and a glazed door. Notably, the building features lap-jointed arch-bracing, an ancient technique that persisted into the 15th century in the Dalham area, likely crafted by one carpenter and his apprentices. The original roof was of the coupled rafter type but was later rebuilt with clasped purlins. There are small, blocked, two-light mullioned window openings with shutter rebates. Significant alterations include a near complete re-roofing in the 18th century and a rear extension added around 1970.
