Description
Lower Mill is a large smock mill built around 1790. It stands approximately 16 metres high and features a ground floor with three additional octagonal floors. The structure is made of weatherboarded timber framing set on a plinth of tarred brick. It has small-pane casements with a pentice roof, and a beehive cap that includes a gallery and a fantail. The mill originally had four patent sails, although they were not in place as of 1983. Inside, there are three pairs of stones mounted on a hurst frame on the first floor. The mill was fully operational until 1926, and by 1983, a complete restoration was well underway. For further details and photographs, refer to "WINDMILLS IN SUFFOLK" by Peter C.J. Dolman, published by the Suffolk Mills Group in 1978.
