Description
The Risby War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920 by Mr. Thomas Dinham Atkinson and erected by Hanchets, stonemasons from Bury St Edmunds. Additional names were added after the Second World War.
Constructed from Weldon stone, the memorial is prominently located on the village green, surrounded by several listed buildings. It features a tall, finely-carved Latin cross with a tapering square shaft that rests on a two-stepped octagonal plinth and a two-stepped octagonal base. The south face of the cross displays the monogram HIS, while the north face features the ancient Christian symbol of the Chi Rho.
Recently added granite plaques with incised inscriptions retain earlier wording. The south face of the plinth reads "IN MEMORIAM 1914-1919," and the south face of the upper step of the base states, "THE SECOND WORLD WAR 1939-1945 TO THE HONOURED MEMORY OF THE FOUR MEN OF THIS VILLAGE WHO DID NOT RETURN."
The names of nine men who died during the First World War are inscribed on the north, west, and east faces of the plinth, while the names of four men who died during the Second World War are inscribed on the south-east and south-west faces of the upper step of the base.
