Description

5 Honey Hill is a house, now used as a museum office, dating from around 1590 with alterations made in the mid 18th century, around 1900, and in 1990. The building is timber-framed and plastered, with the front featuring large raised panels from the mid 18th century. It has a plaintiled roof and one internal and one rear chimney stack made of 18th and 20th century red brick. The structure has a two-cell plan with a modified cross-wing.

The exterior is two storeys high with attics and features a three-window range. The mid-18th century casements have transoms and leaded lights, most of which were renewed around 1900 and include wooden label moulds. The entrance doorway, dating from around 1900, is located in a single-storey extension to the right and has a boarded and battened door with a fanlight.

Inside, the hall to the left contains an altered mid-16th century open fireplace and moulded beams and joists from the same period, which were adapted and reused around 1590. There is a fragmentary wall painting of floral designs above the fireplace. The parlour to the right features plain and massive joists, along with a late 17th century fragment of a wall painting depicting a trompe-l'œil arcaded window. The hall chamber displays important fragmentary wall paintings from around 1590, featuring alternate vertical panels in red and grey, with a foliate frieze in black and white on grey. On the east wall, there are two damaged black letter Scriptural inscriptions in red borders, taken from Barker's version of the Bible from 1581. The parlour chamber also has similar wall paintings, with panels that include an additional frieze of diamonds within a red border.
