Description
Oak Hall Cottage and Oak Cottage, originally one house, date back to the 15th century and were converted into a two-cell lobby entry house in the 17th century. In the 18th century, they were remodeled into two cottages. There are 18th to 19th century additions on each gable end, and the buildings were altered and extended in the 1980s. The roof was destroyed by fire in 1981. The cottages are timber framed and rendered, with a thatched roof, while the additions have pantiled roofs. They are 1½ storeys high and feature various small casement windows. At the rear of Oak Hall Cottage, the upper half of a 15th-century diamond-mullioned hall window is exposed. There are two hooded dormers from the 1980s, along with 20th-century doors and glazed porches. The internal stack has a rebuilt square shaft. Inside, there is some 15th-century framing, mainly visible in Oak Hall Cottage. The cambered tie beam of the open hall truss has a mortice for a crown-post. The 17th-century inserted floor has exposed joists, and a stack was inserted in the lower bay of the hall against the open truss. In Oak Hall Cottage, there is an open fireplace with the original lintel and 18th-century bread ovens. In Oak Cottage, there is a notable 18th-century shelved cupboard with a semi-domed head and paired panelled doors.
