Description

Mill House is a mid-17th century house, originally linked to the nearby Badwell Ash post mill. The house is timber-framed and rendered, with a double-Roman tile roof. It has a two-cell lobby entrance plan. A 19th-century extension at the south-east end features roughcast rendering, clay pantiles, a red brick gable end facing the road with a chimney stack and high coping, a small dormer with a single-pitch slate roof, and 2-light casement windows. The ground floor has 2-light casement windows and a half-glazed door. The main range has an internal chimney stack with a plain shaft of Tudor bricks, and 2 small-paned 3-light windows on each floor, with a 20th-century plank door. A rear lean-to extends along the back, its roof following the main roof’s slope. The timber frame is 4 bays, including a chimney bay which is partially exposed internally, showing widely-spaced studs and arched braces. Ceiling joists are set on edge. Significant older timber is present within the house, though there’s no evidence of an earlier structure. The roof is not accessible.
