Description
Norwich Ale Store is a shop and house dating from the late 17th century. It is constructed with a timber frame and rendered exterior, topped with clay pantiles. The building has one and a half storeys and originally featured a basic two-cell lobby-entrance plan, which has since been modified to a three-cell layout. The right end unit of the building previously had a lower roof-line. Inside, there is an internal chimney stack with a plain rebuilt red brick shaft.
The exterior includes two flat-headed dormers, each fitted with two-light small-paned 20th-century standard windows. There are four early 19th-century canted bay windows that are spaced irregularly along the front; two of these serve as shop windows, with a half-glazed shop door situated between them. A four-panelled half-glazed house door leads into the lobby. Inside, the main timbers are exposed, featuring one open fireplace with a plain lintel and a main beam that has a small chamfer and pyramid stops. Most of the roof timbers are covered with plaster. To the left, there is a lower addition with a hipped roof, while on the right, there is a small lean-to.
