Description
The bridge over the River Gipping, with an attached lock, was built around 1780 and has undergone repairs with gault brick in the 19th century. It features a humped structure made of red brick, with a semi-circular arch spanning the river and a smaller arch to the left. The parapets are 1 meter high and have moulded and painted stone and concrete cappings. Upstream of the bridge is a contemporary lock made of red and gault brick. The wooden gates, which date from the late 19th century and the early 20th century, are mostly intact but in a state of disrepair. This site is believed to be the best surviving example of a lock from the Ipswich and Stowmarket Navigation. The parish boundary with Baylham runs through the center of the River Gipping, thus passing through the bridge and lock.
