Description

The Botesdale, Redgrave and Rickinghall war memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with later additions for subsequent conflicts. It is situated on a raised area of hardstanding in the Market Place of Botesdale, at the junction of The Street and Back Hills, and is surrounded by several Grade II-listed buildings.

Constructed from Portland stone, the memorial features a tall, wheel-head cross with a tapering shaft that ends in a moulded foot, with both the cross and shaft inset. The cross rises from a square pedestal that sits atop a substantial square plinth, all resting on a single-step stone base. Two wedge-shaped stone panels are positioned at the bottom of the plinth on the south-west and north-east sides, with the south-west panel inset into the base. The inscriptions and names are displayed on recessed, fielded panels on the plinth and the two stone tablets, with all lettering incised and painted black.

The south-west face of the plinth bears the inscription: "IN GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF/ THOSE MEN FROM THE PARISHES/ OF/ BOTESDALE-REDGRAVE-RICKINGHALL-/ SUPERIOR AND INFERIOR,/ WHO FELL/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914–1918." The names of 61 individuals who fell in the First World War are inscribed on the remaining three faces of the plinth.

The dedication for the Second World War is found on the stone tablet to the south-west, which reads: "ALSO/ IN AFFECTIONATE MEMORY OF/ THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE/ 1939 – 45 WAR/ (12 NAMES)." The stone tablet to the north-east commemorates the Korean War with the inscription: "THE KOREAN WAR/ 1950–1953/ IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF/ (1 NAME)."
