Description
The gateway and screen walls, located 2 metres west of Shrubland Hall Lodge, were built around 1850 for Sir W.F. Middleton, Bart. The entrance features a pair of square limestone piers that stand about 1.5 meters high, each topped with a moulded cornice and having sunk panels on their faces. On either side of the piers are wrought iron pedestrian gates, which hang from identical piers. Attached to the left and right are screen walls that have a semi-elliptical shape. These walls are made of gault brick, standing 1 meter high with plain limestone cappings, and are spaced 1.5 meters apart. Between each pair of piers, there is an open screen constructed from semi-circular gault clay tiles arranged one above another, finished with a limestone coping. The terminal piers at the ends of each wall are larger, reaching 1.5 meters in height and also featuring moulded limestone cornices.
