Description
The Ivies is a house located on Church Road in Worlingworth. It has origins dating back to the 16th century with a parlour cell, while the rest of the structure likely dates from the first half of the 17th century, replacing earlier medieval work. The building features a timber frame with plaster, and the service end has been rebuilt in brick on the ground floor, partially plastered over. It has a thatched roof that is half-hipped to the right, and the house stands two storeys high with an attic, arranged in a three-cell form.
The exterior includes three windows, which are 19th and mid-20th century casements, mostly without glazing bars, along with a mid-20th century door. Inside, there is an internal stack with a 20th-century common brick shaft. The parlour contains an axial bridging beam and chamfered joists, while the chamber above showcases some good studding with substantial reverse-curved braces. The roof over the parlour cell has one row of clasped purlins and large arched wind braces. The hall and service end are framed less heavily, featuring a queen-post roof of light construction, although it has not been examined in detail. The hall has a ceiling with chamfered joists, with most of the joists in the lower bay replaced in the mid-20th century with others sourced from elsewhere. The service end has irregular plain joists. Additionally, the service cell and part of the hall chamber are separated from the rest of the house with a separate access. A 16th to 17th century newel stair is located beside the stack, with the upper flight added when the attic was created.
