Description
This barn, located 50 meters north of Manor Farmhouse in Ashbocking, dates from the early to mid-17th century. It has three bays and is constructed from timber framing with weatherboarding. The roof is covered with pantiles, although it was originally thatched. The barn features impressive framing, including arch-braced tie beams, although all but one of the braces have been replaced with 19th-century knees. The roof has a two-tier butt-purlin structure, with the upper tier of purlins being wind-braced. The two outer bays are divided at the roof level by trusses that include principal rafters, collar-beams, and knees that brace the principals to the posts. This construction technique, which allows for greater space by omitting tie beams, is not typically found in Suffolk barns before the late 18th century.
