Description

This is a late 16th and 17th century farmhouse that has been divided into two dwellings, Pear Tree Cottage and Pear Tree Farmhouse. The building is timber-framed and rendered, with a hipped roof featuring old plain tiles to the front range. A small rear wing at the right end is partly pantiled. The main range is divided into two structural sections, each containing two internal chimney stacks. Each stack has four attached hexagonal shafts with a rectangular base, which have been well rebuilt, similar to a stack at Pitts Farmhouse in Honeypot Lane. There are five upper windows and four lower windows, all 3-light except for one 2-light upper window above the porch, and all are 20th century metal casements with small panes. A 19th century enclosed porch has fluted bargeboards, a spike finial, and a 4-panelled half-glazed door with small-paned windows on either side.

Pear Tree Cottage occupies the left half of the front and was undergoing restoration during the survey, appearing to be the oldest part of the building. The interior's layout is based on a typical three-cell plan with an internal chimney. Exposed timber framework reveals four bays of irregular size, including a chimney bay, with close studding and tension bracing to the end walls. The ground floor rooms on either side of the stack have ovolo-moulded main beams and roll-moulded joists. In the service end, a partition wall that originally contained two doorways has been removed. The service bay has plain joists. The roof space appears original, with chamfered and curved stops to the main beams and joists set on edge. Remnants of original T-shaped windows remain in the left gable end on both floors; the short side lights with ovolo-moulded mullions survive, while the central, larger window openings have been removed. The internal stack contains four hearths; the ground floor hearth on the left has a shallow brick arch with a rounded back to the fireplace, while the one on the right has a plain timber lintel. Both upper fireplaces have arched openings of chamfered brick. The roof structure incorporates butt purlins. Pear Tree Farmhouse comprises the right-hand half of the building, and some internal timbering is said to exist but was not accessible for inspection.
