Description
Burnt Cottages is a pair of cottages dating from the early 17th century or earlier, which were subdivided and remodeled in the mid-19th century. The cottages are two storeys tall and feature a three-cell cross-entry plan. They are timber-framed and encased in mid-19th century red brick, with gault brick quoins and dressings. The roof is covered with double-Roman pantiles. A large axial chimney made of narrow late 16th century or early 17th century bricks is present. The cottages have mid-19th century small-paned casements with segmental arched heads made of gault brick. There are two mid-19th century boarded entrance doors, one likely located at the cross-entry position, and a third door in the left-hand gable was replaced by a framed and boarded door around 1986. A small amount of plain framing is exposed at the service cell on the left, but the remainder of the interior has not been examined.
